Book Update!

Writer's picture: Amber TudorAmber Tudor

I'm about halfway through with my book, so I thought I would share another excerpt. My goal is to publish my book by the end of the year. Fingers crossed!

This excerpt is a free verse poem about being in the hospital with my grandma when she was so sick a few years ago. Being a caretaker was never easy, but the moments spent in the hospital were some of the hardest - never knowing what was going to happen or if she was coming home:

"Walking through endless white walls and halls with all doors, you feel the cool, crisp air on your skin. Goosebumps flood your arms like the anxiety and adrenaline in your veins. Each empty room has a bed that creaks with the sound of pain. It's seen the worst of it all - sadness, anguish, and death. Am I lost? Where is she?

Finally, the right room, where she is. But she doesn't look like herself - so many tubes and wires. They're treating her body, but her soul is dying. Watching a golden rose turn into bronze is a sympathy you don't want to feel. People constantly see her like this. Nurses, doctors, specialists - a new one every day. Faces run together, names are irrelevant. Who are you? Can you help her?

Minutes turn to hours turn to days turn to weeks. Slowly believing couches and chairs are hotel beds. Never wanting to leave just in case. News doesn't happen steadily, it's always all at once. Learning test results and nurse lingo makes the neverending minutes pass by faster and grippy socks are the latest fashion craze. The mundane routine becomes second nature. How long will this last? Is this home now?

Bad news rushes in with an army of staff. They speak, but no sound comes out. Your body is paralyzed and your eyes are wet. Staring at her motionless body, waiting for her to stand up and walk out, but it never happens. Doctors try to explain, but there's no use. Your heart shatters as it lands on the icy, sterile floor. Will she ever get better? Is this the end?"
